E-L. Cartwright’s visionary new poetry collection, following on from It’s For Joy (2000), explores the themes of time, transition, memory and perception in a sometimes personal, other times dramatic manner. The Dreams & Nightmares become a metaphoric prism through which various aspects of existence, such as childhood and old age, are viewed. Here the reader is invited to “rest awhile … beneath the cruel sun’s shade”, while being aware that as they do so, shadows gather round them marking the end of the day. In a work that blurs the boundaries between reality and imagination, culminating in the final poem, the poet asks us the question: just where falls the boundary between dreams and nightmares?
